Artists Research

Russ Mills

Russ Mills is an artist who was born in England, Yorkshire, in 1952. He creates his piece of Art using paint and multimedia installations. Russ Mills has also designed stage sets, produced record covers, and book covers.

Russ Mills uses outlines of figures sometimes covering up features of the body with splashes of paint, line drawings and markings. He often uses black and white in his designs whereas at other times he ads other colours. Not just the portrait of a person is used but also animals.

I have chosen to take the Conceal and Reveal path in the second part of my project. I feel that Russ Mills is a great artist to look into and to start with as he conceals areas of the characters in his designs. He also reveals other areas by making it clear to see compared to the rest of the image.

Russ Mills reveals a sense of mood through his art work. His work is serious and shows deep thought. I feel that personal thoughts are concealed and then revealed in a physical, graphic and artistic way.

I have used Russ Mills art and techniques to inspire work of my own. I have responded to his style by using my own photographs of a model and scans from painted samples. This resulted in a successful response to Russ Mills work. I have used Russ Mills style of art to reveal a serious mood and conceal areas of the model to bring more attention to other parts of the image.
